LIBRARY PHYSICAL STRUCTURE

  • Started in the year 2001 to fulfill the aims and objectives of MGMC&RI.
  • Housed in its own separate 3 storied building with a carpet area of 4000 sq.mtr / 48,000 sq.ft with 8 Reading rooms and is easily accessible for Staff and Students of the College and hospital

PREAMBLE:

The Central Library was started in the year 2001 with the establishment of The Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute popularly known as MGMC&RI by SRI BALAJI EDUCATIONA L AND CHARITABLE PUBLIC TRUST, as a maiden venture with an in take of 100 students. The Library was established to fulfill the aims and objectives of the MGMC&RI.

MGMC&RI was established to fulfill the following aims and objectives 

  1. To provide high quality of health care at affordable cost
  2. To provide high quality medical education and
  3. To produce high quality Medical personnel

The Central Library is playing a key role for achieving the above objectives of MGMC&RI. They include:

  1. To provide excellent supporting service to the academic fraternity of MGMC&RI, KGMC and IGIDS
  2. To cultivate reading habits among the students community by providing excellent library facilities
  3. To provide latest information to update ones knowledge in his / her field
  4. To develop health professionals of high standard
  5. To provide health information to all – academician, policy makers, planners, administrators and all those engaged in promoting heath
  6. To be one of the best health science Libraries in Pondicherry

COLLECTION:

The Library has a collection of 15,000 books and reports which includes WHO Publication, UN/UNESCO Publication, Health Ministry Publications, ICMR and DGHS Publications, archives, Theses and C.D’s. The collection is being updated periodically and new books / editions are added. The collections includes not only books on “HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES “ but also in other areas like computer Science, Management, Yoga and Books by and on great personalities like Pt. NEHRU, GANDHI, SWAMI VIVEKANDA etc thus making the library collection with variety of Books.

JOURNALS:

The Library is currently subscribing for 155 journals (National 73 and international 82). There are 2000 archives Journals available from 2001.

CONSULTATION:

The library is kept open for 14 hours a day (8A.M. TO 10 P.M.) on all working days and from 9 A.M. TO 5 P.M. on Sundays

SERVICES:

The Library is totally automated. The entire Library Building is WI-FI enabled. THE OPAC (ON-LINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOUGE) helps the readers to find out whether a Book by a given Author or Title is available and how many copies are available and what are the other books written by the same author. A reader can RESERVE THE BOOK “ on-line “ and also find out the status of a book – whether the book is available for issue or already issued.

The Library Transaction (Issue and Return) is done by separate counter. The borrowed books can be returned at the return counter before entering in to the main library.

The digital library has a collection of about 1000 E- BOOKS and also the previous years University question Papers and University syllabus and the students can make use of the same. The digital library has 45 Computers.

Separate Reading Room Facilities are available for Faculty members and P.G./ Interns 40 Systems (20 for faculty and 20 for P.G./Interns) are available in the Second Floor for internet Browsing and other related works.

The E-LEARNING centre has 50 systems available for the students. LIVE recording of Daily Class Room Lecture is done and available in the E-LEARNING centre and the students who have not attended the class on a particular day can make use of this service. This service is an additional service to the regular classes and one can use this service at any time, at his /her leisure and from any place. A Student can also send mail to the concerned teacher for doubt / clarification if any and get the reply. 

The Library, in addition to the print journals, also subscribes the NML E-JOURNALS CONSORTIUM (ERMED) and gets 2400 ON-LINE JOURNALS Articles required can be obtained in PDF form and downloaded directly for articles which are not directly available a requisition can be sent to NML and the NML will provided the article by scanning the same from their holdings in PDF from.

Resource sharing Service is also available and the library is a member of the Delnet (Developing Library Net work) and references which are not available are arranged through DELNET and supplied.

Photocopying facilities are available. However, the whole book or heavy books are not allowed for photocopying.

USER AWARNESS PROGRAMME ON ERMED:

The Library organized a user awareness program on ERMED on 17.06.2010. in the Seminar Hall of the library for the benefit of the faculty and the P.G.’s so that optimum utilization of the ermed will be made.

ORIENTATION FOR NEW STUDENTS:

An orientation class on “How to use the Library “is arranged by the library for the new students who joined the institute so that they become a familiar with the library rules, Facilities and the discipline to be followed.
